Katrin Christensen-Cowan, MSW, LICSW

Individual Psychotherapy, Couples Therapy, Group Therapy, and Yoga Nidra

Katrin is a psychotherapist, yoga teacher and advocate for the soul—the part of you that knows when you are showing up and living life the way that you are called to live; and the part of you that knows when you are not.

We live in times that can feel full of noise and lacking in wisdom, times where it can feel very hard to remember what it feels like to thrive.   Katrin views therapy as a space to rediscover or define what thriving looks like for you and to identify any obstacles that are in your way. This may involve understanding and shifting relational patterns, processing grief and trauma, or using yoga and breathwork to calm or energize your nervous system.

Katrin's love for yoga began in college and has continued ever since.  Although she initially planned for a career in policy work after graduating from Stanford University with a degree in American Studies, her mother's cancer diagnosis and subsequent death changed her path. The experience of caring for her mother and grieving her loss moved her away from policy work and toward direct work with people.  She felt an urgency about wanting to live a good life, heartache and all, and about wanting to support others in doing the same.

She completed a yoga teacher training and started teaching yoga classes, went to graduate school for a Master’s of Social Work (MSW) degree and completed a post-graduate clinical fellowship through The Minnesota Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.  She has done thousands of hours of yoga and therapy trainings over the years with many beloved teachers.   In 2010, she started Water’s Edge Psychotherapy.  She works with individuals, couples, and groups from late adolescence through elder hood, addressing a wide range of issues, from acute crises to a longing for more fulfillment in life and relationships.

Katrin has particular expertise in friendship and helping people develop and deepen their support systems. She also has expertise in helping people navigate transitions, including relationship endings, career changes, and parenthood, and has extensive experience helping women and couples navigate the complexities of pregnancy, loss, fertility treatments, and adoption.

Outside of work and her daily yoga practice, Katrin loves music, reading, movement and being outside in every season.   Friendship is a central joy and priority in her life, as is her family, including her husband and two school aged children.   She is mom to three kids, the eldest of whom, Caleb, died as an infant.   Caleb, like Katrin’s mom, has been one of the great teachers in her life, and has helped her live into both joys and sorrows larger than anything she could have imagined.   It is the work of her life to sit with others and support them as they learn to do the same.
